Ancient faith, new home

Father Bisenty Gerges presides over the first Passion Week service April 12 at the newly opened St. George's Coptic Orthodox Church.

A FORMER United Church building in Surrey is now the permanent home of British Columbia's only Coptic Christian church. Graced by icons painted by the church's priest, Father Bisenty Gerges, St. George's Coptic Orthodox Church recently celebrated its new location on 108th Avenue in Surrey with a Pascha (Easter) service. The building previously housed Northwood United Church.
The Coptic Orthodox church was established 1,900 years ago in Egypt. There are currently 20 Coptic churches in Canada. The local congregation of 400 comprises 130 families. Services are conducted twice weekly, with 90 per cent of the liturgy in English, and hymns and chants in the Coptic language. - MORE CLICK HERE
