Bonnie Thurston, a widely-published author and former professor of the Pittsburg Theological Seminary, is one of the most knowledgeable and thought-provoking speakers in North America on interfaith engagement and on the writings of Thomas Merton. Her talk will consider Thomas Merton’s general approach to interfaith understanding and engagement, a topic that has intrigued both scholars and general readers of Merton’s writing. "Living as Listeners with Hearts Attending": 1-day Retreat with Dr. Bonnie Thurston "Living as Listeners with Hearts Attending": 1-day Retreat with Dr. Bonnie Thurston - Sat. Sept. 4, 10am-4:pm, St. Francis-in-the-Wood Anglican Church, 4773 South Piccadilly Road, West Vancouver.
After taking our own spiritual temperature and an introduction to listening with the ears of the heart, we'll attend to what Thomas Merton teaches us about the spiritual charism of listening. Material will be drawn primarily from Merton's poetry, especially the poem "In Silence" from Thoughts in Solitude and other works. The day will include short experiences of directed prayer, talks and opportunities for silent reflection. Cost: $50 for TMSC members/$55 non-members (lunch included). Limit: 20 participants. After 27 years of university teaching, Dr. Thurston is living as a solitary in the hills of West Virginia. She is the author of 11 books in New Testament studies and theology, and two books of poetry -- The Heart's Lands and Hints & Glimpses. She is a founding member of the International Thomas Merton Society and continues to write and lecture extensively on Merton's life and thought. She is an ordained Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a gifted retreat leader. Dr. Thurston was the William F. Orr Professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The Vancouver Chamber Choir’s 40th anniversary season opens with a concert of music from some of the greatest choral masters of all time. From Palestrina, the greatest Italian Renaissance composer of sacred music, one of his most famous pieces - the Mass for Pope Marcellus. We mark the centennial of 20th century American great Samuel Barber with his signature choral work Reincarnations. Then conductor John William Trotter and the Choir are joined by pianist Terence Dawson for Béla Bartók’s poignant Slovak Folk Songs and a set of vivacious Gypsy Songs by Johannes Brahms.
