Concordia University College of Alberta emphasizes teaching excellence in a caring university atmosphere. From its Christian roots in the Lutheran Church, Concordia has built a learning community where students are encouraged to examine the world, empowered to seek their own understanding and equipped to grow from the experience - all in a liberal arts tradition.
Concordiažs greatest strength is its size. With an enrolment of 1,850, students can get to know each other, and their professors. While they participate in a full range of scholarly activities, faculty members are dedicated to giving students the best education possible. We are primarily a teaching university, providing a rigourous, student-focused education in an engaging environment.
A recent Alberta-wide survey of graduating university students found that 91percent of Concordia graduates were satisfied with the quality of education they received, compared with 79 percent at Alberta universities as a whole. Established in 1921 by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to educate young men entering the ministry and teaching professions, Concordia entered the post-secondary arena in 1967- and, under the authority of the Universities Act (Alberta), received degree-granting status in 1987. Today, Concordia offers bachelor degrees in arts, education, environmental health, management and science.
Academic offerings at Concordia include three- and four-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, with 18 majors or areas of concentration, and 23 minors; and a four-year Bachelor of Management. We also offer a two-year Bachelor of Education (After Degree); a 15-month Bachelor of Environmental Health (After Degree); and after-degree diploma programs in information systems security and career development. Our church vocation programs include Director of Parish Services, Parish Nursing, Lutheran Teacher Education, and Pre-Seminary. At Concordia, we are committed to developing a student intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually. Student life offers a rich and fulfilling experience, with a wide range of extracurricular activities - including student clubs and associations, music, drama and athletics. Concordia athletes compete in the competitive Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) in badminton, basketball, golf, hockey, soccer, swimming, curling and cross-country running. Recreational sports and a state-of-the-art fitness centre are also available to students. Spiritual growth is as critical to us as the academic, social and physical well-being of every student. The Christian faith is central to decision-making; and our nurturing atmosphere is a reflection of our beliefs, and commitment to our faith. Daily chapel - led by faculty, students and guests, and open to everyone - is the focal point of spiritual life on campus. The Campus Chaplain serves the entire community, and students play a vital role in the planning and organization of spiritual activities, on and off campus.
Concordia provides a variety of services, including a career resource, chaplaincy, and academic, financial and personal counselling services. In addition, we provide support services for students with disabilities, and special student groups.
