Serving as a chaperone for two dozen children aged 7
– 12 couldn’t be more fulfilling, according to David Turner,
current tour leader for the 31st African Children’s Choir.
“I’ve been a huge supporter ever since
learning of the organization,” says Turner, whose long-term
commitment has taken him to Uganda several times.
He attests to the impact his work has made on his
life. “I feel a renewed sense of commitment to the work being done
[in Africa], and I’m so excited to be a part of it. I wish you could
all see what I’ve seen, and I pray that some of you will.”
Turner joins the ranks of many Canadians, to volunteer
as an ‘uncle’ or ‘auntie’ to 26 of Africa’s
once most vulnerable – and yet most promising – children.
Since 1984, the choirs have toured across North
America, the U.K. and other parts of the world, singing and dancing at
venues and special events – as the voice of thousands of
underprivileged children like them in Africa.
The tours support thousands of children in programs
across Africa, representing the hope and potential these children have to
bring change to their communities and countries.
Music for Life, home of the African Children’s
Choir, sends short-term teams throughout the year to its projects in South
Africa, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda – to focus on outreach camps and
educational development programs.
The choir underscores the importance of its mission:
“Helping Africa’s most vulnerable children today, so they can
help Africa tomorrow.”
