Canada Institute of Linguistics
Technology may allow us to travel to distant lands, record our observations and communicate by satellite back to our homes; but if we are unable to understand another language and culture, an invisible wall remains.
The Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) offers practical training in language and culture analysis. CanIL courses, offered at Trinity Western University (TWU) in B.C., teach crucial skills including the recognition and pronunciation of non-English speech sounds; alphabet formation; and analysis of grammars and systems of meaning, beliefs and world-view.
The first course set (eight weeks in the summer) is a thorough, practical introduction to applied linguistics, language and culture learning, and is a prerequisite to the advanced courses in the fall and spring semesters.
It is recommended for anyone planning to work in a cross-cultural context, especially in linguistics, literacy or translation.
Courses may be taken towards a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate. Courses can be combined with transfer credits and can be included in a TWU undergrad BA, with a minor or a major in linguistics.
Advanced courses may be taken for graduate credit, and will meet the requirements for a Master of Applied Linguistics and Exegesis (MLE) degree. Courses are based on proven techniques, drawn from more than 60 years of research in some 1,500 minority languages.
