From China with Christ MANY of Canada's Chinese citizens are evangelical Christians. Some dedicate themselves to overseas missions; others focus on outreach to Canada's aboriginals. But for many, their own community is the most significant mission field. - more 'Life is too short, I must do Christian art' IT IS a common lament of mine that seminaries in Canada pay little or no attention to the arts. Oh, there are some exceptions; but by and large, art makes no appearance in the hallowed halls and classrooms of theological study. - more Standing against Illegal detention NIGHTLY newscasts about Canadian citizens William Samson, Zahra Kazemi and Majer Arar have brought illegal detention and torture flooding into our homes. For most Canadians, even proximity to the TV feels just a bit too close for comfort. Feeling powerless, we change the channel. I know I do. - more A candid vew from street level Emerging from the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's roundtable on poverty and homelessness, Street Level was a late-April Ottawa gathering of some 300 individuals representing organizations from across Canada. - more Gospel according to puppets "DO YOU like puppets?" asked Min Min, my six year old neighbour, after seeing my small puppets. "My dad does too, but his puppets are much bigger than yours," he continued. His dad, Mr. Su then showed me his Pili puppets. When I shared my vision for using puppets to tell Bible stories, Mr. Su offered to listen to the stories and help me turn them into puppet scripts. - more Judy Olson - in Sierra Leone Canadian Lutheran missionary Judy Olson has done literacy work in West Africa since 1987, beginning in Sierra Leone. Forced to move because of the war in that country, she now lives in Namibia. She is currently working with the Dhimba literacy project, which involves both New Testament translation and HIV/AIDS information. - more A passage through India IN DELHI, my husband Garry and I stayed at a hotel in the older part of the city. A survey of the staff revealed that the manager was a Syrian Orthodox Christian, the owner a Sikh, the chamberman from Nepal most likely a Buddhist, and the doorman a Hindu Rajput. How's that for multiculturalism? - more Jubilee Year honours Jesuit founders THE SOCIETY of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits, are celebrating Jubilee Year 2006, in honour of founding members Francis Xavier, Ignatius Loyola and Pierre Favre. - more Why Azusa Street still matters This year marks the 100th anniversary of the renowned Azusa Street Mission revival in Los Angeles. The mission's charismatic manifestations of faith soon spread beyond California, and inspired tremendous missions activity - as this excerpt from The Azusa Street Mission and Revival demonstrates. - more Opening Pandora's care package WHILE there are no statistics or hard facts about the care packages sent to missionaries abroad, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that the senders sometimes miss the mark. - more David Shawn Meade in Argentina I was sitting at an outdoor pizza place, one evening, when a poor street vendor with two young boys passed by the tables trying to sell some small greetings cards for a few cents each. The boys eyed a half of pizza, at the next table, untouched by those that had left it behind. - more Going the extra mile . . . LOCATED in the mountains of Indonesia's eastern-most island, called West Papua, are the the Dao, a tribe largely cut off from the outside world. As we approached them by traversing the Dao River, hiking the valley and the Dao range of mountains, these people captured our hearts. - more Barbara Fuller in Moldova God is doing great things in and through the believers in Moldova and I see them all actively reaching out to share the good news of the gospel with their neighbours and friends. - more Roundup End of the Spear
