Racing for shelter

More than 100 members of Vancouver's real estate community, organized into at least 18 teams, will be taking to the streets around BC Place Stadium May 4, in an effort to raise more than $25,000 for Union Gospel Mission (UGM). The teams will be competing in an Amazing Race-style competition. UGM offers 81 long-term suites and provides temporary shelter for an average of 35 other people every night.

Progress in evangelism?

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada has produced a survey for church leaders to help discover role models, ideas, and resources that can help all congregations be more effective in evangelism. The results of this national initiative will be shared later in the year. Church leaders are invited to participate.

Youth prepare

One thousand Canadian and American Roman Catholics aged 18 - 35 will gather May 18 - 21 in Quebec City for a youth summit on the theme 'I Do.' The program will include prayer, worship, a pilgrimage to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, social and cultural activities, a Catholic rock concert and teaching on the Eucharist, the Incarnation and marriage. The gathering will prepare participants for the 49th International Eucharistic Congress also in Quebec City June 15 - 22, 2008.

Only one alligator

"Canada's crocodile hunter," Paul Springate, curator of the Reptile Refuge, and volunteer Steve Hoffman have been hunting through a ravine near Trinity Western University for a two-foot alligator. Campus security at the 4000-student Christian university in Langley, BC spotted the reptile on the night of April 24 and called in Springate. The alligator may have been released by people who bought it as a small pet but didn't know what to do with it once it got larger, or it may have gotten away from someone who was playing with it outside. Unless it is caught, the alligator is unlikely to survive long in the cool spring weather.

Sing and pray

A CD of Jachin Mullen's song 'Pray for the World' was sent to 100 radio stations across Canada the week of April 30. All radio royalty fees as well as proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to the Home of Hope orphanage in Rwanda.

Missionary bishop

Martyn Minns will be installed as 'missionary bishop' of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) May 5. CANA, officially a missionary outreach of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, represents Anglicans who have withdrawn from the Episcopal Church in the US and the Anglican Church of Canada over issues such as the blessing of same-sex unions, but who wish to remain in communion with other Anglican churches worldwide. Minns has been rector of Truro Church in Fairfax, VA since 1991. His church operates programs for the homeless, immigrants, and international students; has planted several daughter churches; and has ministries for Spanish-speaking, Arabic, and Chinese groups.

Christians, unite!

Noted worship leaders Brian Doerksen, Robin Mark, David Clifton and Geoff Moore will likely be the main attraction at Unite in Worship, a conference in Ontario May 4 - 5. Featured speakers will include Tom Davis and Crystal Downing. The event is for those who are involved in their church's worship ministry, and also participants in children's ministry. A variety of conference passes and concert tickets are available. The event takes place at Kentucky Road Tabernacle in Brampton.

The Call to Nashville

The My Canada advocacy group is urging interested Christians to 'rise to The Call' and sign up soon for a special July 4 - 8 event in Nashville, Tennessee. The organization is asking Canadians to participate because "the battle for a moral revolution generation is one that transcends borders (totally). It is a generational battle and a cultural battle that encompasses the entire Western world." The Call will involve fasting, prayer and worship. There are 220 seats available, and the ministry says they will likely "fill up fast."

A musical Covenant

The legacy of the Jewish people will be honoured in Toronto May 13. The Covenant, presented by the International Christian Embassy Jeruusalem (ICEJ), will make its Canadian premiere on Mother's Day at the Toronto Centre for the Arts; it will be simulcast at Empire and Cineplex theatres across the country. The musical, ICEJ says, tells "the miraculous story of the people of Israel, from the call of Abraham . . . to the re-birth of the modern state of Israel."
