Major student assembly in Ontario

Canada hosted the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) World Assembly July 11 -19 at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ontario. It was the eighth such event, which is held every four years -- and the first time Canada has hosted it. The gathering drew some 700 delegates from evangelical student groups in over 150 countries. The event was hosted by Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship of Canada and included a 60th anniversary celebration.

Lutheran youth in Ottawa

More than 630 youth and leaders convened at the Lutheran Church of Canada's (LCC) National Youth Gathering in Ottawa, July 6 - 10. Using scripture, visuals, life stories, drama, music and Bible studies, the youth focused on two key themes: how God, in Christ, loves them as his unique children; and how every child of God is called to share that love. The gathering also stressed how connected each Christian is to the body of Christ.

Kairos invites participation

Kairos is encouraging Canadians to participate in fall hearings on pre-budget tax consultations. The organizaton is urging people to email their requests to appear at hearings by July 31, and will call for a commitment of funds to a poverty reduction plan for Canada, including an increase to the Child Tax Benefit and a national affordable housing program; cancellation of debts of low-income countries and an increase to overseas development assistance to 0.7 percent of GDP; and ecologically sustainable tax policies. Hearings will be held in September and October in Ottawa, Iqualuit, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Victoria, Charlottetown, Halifax, Rivere-du-Loup, Montreal and London.

African Bishop ordains deacons

Sandy Greene, a Missionary Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Rwanda, recently ordained two deacons, the Rev. Dr. Philip Tse and the Rev. Jennifer Isaak, in his new role as Bishop for the Anglican Coalition in Canada. Greene commented, "I am delighted to find so much vitality in the congregations of the ACiC. I see them looking forward to a new mission and ministry in the west and through out Canada. I am particularly pleased to see Richmond Emmanuel Church, B.C. preparing to send out the Rev. Philip Tse as a missionary to Chinese communities in northern California in the USA as well. Truly we are missionaries without borders."

Canada at the Crossroads

Six young people are walking from BC to Ottawa to raise awareness about "the thousands of children killed by abortion each year in Canada." They recently passed through Saskatoon. The walkers are all Catholics -- and this is the first Canadian Crossroads walk. The young people are from BC, Alberta, Louisiana and California. They are speaking in parishes across the country. -- BC Catholic

CRTC approves faith TV

Canada's TV regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), has approved a June application by Crossroads Television Systems to launch stations in Calgary and Edmonton as early as Fall 2007. Local faith based programming will be combined with family friendly entertainment such as Touched by an Angel -- as well as non-Christian programming, as mandated by the CRTC. CTS Calgary will broadcast on channel 32, and CTS Edmonton will broadcast on channel 45.

King's expands programs

King's University College in Edmonton has received accreditation from the Canadian Society for Chemistry. In addition, it is now also authorized by the Alberta government to offer a four-year history degree in the fall. King's currently serves 590 students.

Key appointments

Douglas Cryer has been named new chair of Micah Challenge Canada. He was most recently director of public policy for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. David Willis, who founded Trinity Christian College in Hyderabad, India, has been appointed president of Living Faith Bible College and Living Faith Evangelistic Association in Caroline, Alberta. Lawson Murray is the new Canadian national director for Scripture Gift Mission Canada and director for the Americas region of Lifewords International.
