Starving to end suffering

Ending his fast on December 18 he said, "My fast may be ending, but the suffering of the people in Darfur has not ended. And it will not end unless the Canadian government does more to help bring peace and security to Darfur." United Church of Canada moderator David Giuliano commented: "David is a member of our church family acting on his faith. He's putting himself on the line." -- United Church of Canada

Christian-Muslim dialogue
David W. Shenk, co-author of A Muslim and a Christian in Dialogue, will give a public address at Abbotsford, BC's Columbia Bible College (CBC) January 22. A global missions consultant with Easter Mennonite Missions, Shenk has served as a writer, mission leader, educator and interfaith conversation partner with Muslims. He is firm in his Christian convictions but also firm in his belief that dialogue must begin from a place of respect. "There are no closed countries to the Holy Spirit," he has said. "The Christian mission is not dependent on whether governments invite western missionaries to come. Wherever people live who have not yet met Jesus, there the Holy Spirit will find a way." Shenk will also speak in churches, classes at CBC and at ACTS Seminary at Trinity Western University during his visit that week. The tour is co-sponsored by Mennonite Central Committee BC and three Mennonite Churches in Vancouver. Contact: (604) 850-6639 or peace@mccbc.com.

CFAC protests McCarthyism in Canada
Brian Rushfeldt, executive director of the Canada Family Action Coalition, has issued a news release complaining that human rights laws are "badly" written and "being misused to violate the rights of Canadians guaranteed under section 2 of the Charter. We today have a major national magazine, a federal political party leader and a registered political party, a major Catholic newspaper and an internationally renowned journalist all of whom are being investigated by appointed 'hate speech therapists' from the commissions. Will these complaints be fully pursued? We wait to see but the notion that a quasi-judicial body with people untrained in judicial matters can hear, rule and convict people for their opinions, speech and writing sends us back to McCarthyism days," he said.
24 and philosophy
Three of Tyndale University College's philosophy professors -- Jennifer Hart Weed, Ronald Weed and Richard Davis -- are the editors of a new book 24 and Philosophy: The World According to Jack, released December 21. The TV show 24 deals with issues such as terrorism, political intrigue, trust and loyalty. "Many times in life, there aren't clear questions or answers. How Jack deals with what's thrown at him is what has made this one of the most popular television shows in the world!" said Ms. Weed. "This is a witty but philosophical exploration of the methods and motivations used by Jack Bauer and other characters in the highly charged television drama, and how some questions can be raised and answered in our own lives. . . . I guarantee at any major company . . . around the water cooler on Tuesday morning, they're all talking about 24."
