Tallship roundtrip

The Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) tallship Pacific Grace, a 138' schooner with 21 young people on board, arrived safely in Okinawa, Japan after a lengthy voyage that included Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Departing Victoria, BC in June of last year, the ship is scheduled to complete the 12-month voyage by entering her home port of Victoria on June 14, just in time to prepare the ship for 'Tallships Victoria 2008.' SALTS mission is "To develop the spiritual, relational, and physical potential of young people through sail training, shipboard life, and associated activities in a Christian environment."

Globe and Mail holds poll on Morgentaler

The Globe and Mail is holding an online poll, asking if Morgentaler should receive the Order of Canada. MyCanada, a youth ministry based in Ottawa, is appealing for Christians to vote 'no.' "Please visit this site and make your views known!" says MyCanada in a current news release. "It is as easy as a click of a button to raise your voice on this one. As of this evening the poll was 83% opposed. Let's see if we can get it up to 99% and make a very strong statement to the nation! Click here to vote 'No' Abortionist Henry Morgentaler should not be given this award."

Evangelical churches are growing

Evangelical churches are growing, according to the just-released second issue of Church & Faith Trends, published by the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's Centre for Research on Canadian Evangelicalism. Although the 2001 Canadian census seemed to indicate evangelical churches were shrinking, the churches themselves said they were growing.

Leading Women gather

Thousands of Canadian women are expected to gather in Mississauga, Ontario Feb 28 - Mar 1 for the conference 'Leading Women 2008.' Thirteen Christian organizations are participating with a stated vision "to call together Canadian Christian women in leadership from across our nation."

Stillwood Camp receives award

The Canadian/American Camping Association gave a special 'Award of Excellence' to BC's Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre. Only one other camp in Canada has won this award since it began in 1979. The award states: "Stillwood's example has been one of leadership that has given many others the strength to find and/or discover their vision for camping." Formerly known as Columbia Bible Camp, Stillwood is owned and operated by the BC Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. It is located on 100 acres on a ridge above Cultus Lake and borders on Provincial Park Land near Chilliwack, BC.

EFC meets with Minister of Indian Affairs

Ray Aldred, chair of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's Aboriginal Ministries Council, along with the EFC directors Aileen Van Ginkel and Don Hutchinson, met this week with Canada's Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, Chuck Strahl, to discuss matters pertaining to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Strahl is an outspoken Christian.

Seminary president resigns

Harald Tomesch, president of Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary, has announced his resignation effective February 5. Tomesch cited his desire to return to day-to-day teaching and said he felt his ministry at the seminary was completed. He assumed presidency of Lutheran Church-Canada's eastern seminary in 2005. "We are grateful for Dr. Tomesch's service to the seminary," said Robert Krestick, chairman of the board of regents. "He brought a spirit of innovation with his leadership, and we pray God's continued blessing on his ministry."

Kairos produces podcast

KAIROS has produced its first ever fictional drama podcast, as part of its ongoing campaign calling for legislation of Canadian corporate activity abroad. The play uses the case of Kairos partner The Broad Opposition Front in Cerro de San Pedro, Mexico to highlight the issues facing villagers and concerned citizens who do not want mining operations in their communities. Giving Canadians a Bad Name can be downloaded as an mp3.
