See Erin run

Erin VanWiltenburg and Reuben Jentink, two students at the University of Victoria, plan to run across Africa from Walvis Bay in Namibia to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, covering 4,200 kilometers in 100 days between April and September. This is the equivalent of a marathon a day. The goal of the See-Them-Run project is to raise money to support sustainable education in the countries they run through. Erin became interested in Africa after a three-month Youth For Christ trip to Kenya in 2004.

Ring in the recycled

What does modern recycling have in common with the ancient Eastern Orthodox faith? Bells, in this case. St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in Langley, BC invites the public to attend a special ceremony April 6, where six new bells -- which began life as oxygen cylinders -- will be blessed. "Now there are six less cylinders as potential land-fill, and six more instruments to beautify the world with music and proclaim the glory of God," stated a church press release. The cylinders were donated by Air Liquide, and the bells are named after Orthodox missionaries from Alaska.

At least they're free to talk about it

Equipping Christians for the Public Square (ECP) and the Association for Reformed Political Action hosted an 'Ignite our Culture' conference March 28 - 29 in Willoughby Christian Reformed Church in Langley, B.C. The theme 'A Christian Perspective on Free Speech' was addressed by Tristan Emmanuel, founder and president of ECP; Connie Fournier, co-founder of FreeDominion.ca; Ron Gray, leader of the Christian Heritage Party; Stephen Pidgeon, a lawyer and Christian activist from Seattle; Michael Wagner, a political scientist and writer from Edmonton; and Al Siebring, host of News You Can Use on NoApologies.ca.

Church members can advocate

Kairos, a social action agency of the Canadian Council of Churches, is offering workshops to train church members to teach and advocate for human rights. The initial training sessions will be held in Charlottetown, Montreal, Toronto and Victoria over the next six months. Further information can be obtained from Michael Polanyi. Funding is being provided by Human Resource and Social Development Canada and the Metcalf Foundation.

Asian president comes to Canada

Francis Tsui, Hong Kong-based president of Asian Outreach (AO), will spend more than a week in British Columbia in April visiting churches and supporters with AO's Canadian director, Noel Hutchinson. He will preach at Coastal Church in Vancouver April 20 and at Evangelical Chinese Bible Church in Burnaby April 27. The ministry works in 22 countries.

Kids colour in their Bibles, dude

Children's International Arts Festival is inviting children ages 5-12 from all over the world to answer and illustrate Bible-related questions for an online book called Kids Color Me Bible Gospel of John. The contest is sponsored by Kids Talk About God, an online ministry that grew out of Carey Kinsolving's syndicated column of that name. Those who contribute and their families will be eligible to win one of 12 week-long vacations at dude ranches in the US. Entries will be accepted until March 31, 2009, but some prizes will be awarded before that.

Women delegated to serve

For the first time in the more than 150-year history of the Christian Reformed Church in North America, women will serve as delegates to the denomination's annual synod. Twenty-four of the 188 delegates who have been appointed to participate in Synod 2008 this June in Grand Rapids, Michigan, are women, including seven female pastors.

Burning candles for a good end

Hundreds of people gathered at more than 30 Kairos events across Canada March 29 to light candles participate in Earth Hour, the symbolic turning off of electrical appliances. Participants signed banners and postcards urging Prime Minister Stephen Harper to promote sustainable energy. Kairos: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives is a church-based non-governmental organization that works on a wide range of social justice issues.

Churches that worship together

Novalis Publishing and the Canadian Council of Churches is launching the book Liturgies for Christian Unity at the Canadian Council of Churches headquarters in Toronto April 10. It's an anthology of prayers and texts for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity for the years 1908 - 2008.

Reach out and evangelize someone

The Internet Evangelism Coalition is offering local churches free downloads to help them reach out to their communities and celebrate Internet Evangelism Day April 27. Internet Evangelism Coalition is a group of online ministries based at the Billy Graham Center.
