New PAOC general superintendent

David Wells, chair of the board of directors for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, has been elected the new General Superintendent of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC). He has been the district leader for the BC and Yukon district of the PAOC.

Tyndale's 'Uncommon Ground' campaign

Tyndale University College & Seminary announced the 'Uncommon Ground' campaign May 31, to raise $58 million to help the school with the costs involved with their new building acquisition. Tyndale considers it "one of the largest fundraising efforts by a Christian organization in Canadian history." The official announcement event was held at St. Joseph's Motherhouse in Morrow Park, Toronto, the large Roman Catholic property Tyndale has recently acquired. To date, the campaign has raised $37 million.

Stories of celebration

To conclude its 'Celebration 2008' initiative, the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada has announced a countrywide initiative for churches to submit stories that describe the impact of their "practical expressions of God's love to their communities." The stories and pictures will be featured on a special webpage June 1.

Live album for youth conferences

Sebastian Demrey recorded a live bilingual worship album, Be the Change, at the CJYC Youth Conference in Montreal May 16 - 18. It was released at the Alberta Youth Conference May 23 - 25, and will be used at similar conferences throughout Canada.

Salvation Army and China

The Salvation Army is appealing for financial donations as it provides relief to the victims of the strongest earthquake to hit China in more than three decades. An emergency relief team has been dispatched to the affected areas to provide survivors with food and relief supplies. Salvation Army disaster relief workers from Canada are in Hengdu, Sichuan Province conducting a comprehensive on-site assessment for further emergency relief efforts.

Catholics respond to Burma

Responding to the catastrophic situation in Myanmar, also known as Burma, following Typhoon Nargis, which left more than 100,000 dead and millions of people homeless, Archbishop V. James Weisgerber, president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, has invited the bishops of Canada to hold emergency fundraising collections in all Canadian Catholic parishes during the weekend of May 31 - June 1, or the following weekend.

Book chronicles 'Sea to Sea 2005' ride

Peter Slofstra writes about battling heat, bugs, exhaustion and truck traffic in his new book, A Sea to Sea Odyssey, an account of the bicycle trip that he and more than 150 other riders took across Canada in 2005. Slofstra served as a chaplain to the group as he pedaled the distance with his wife, Marja, on a tandem bike. The trip was organized by the Christian Reformed Church in North America to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the CRC in Canada.

New Director of Pentecostal Studies Appointed

Tyndale University College & Seminary has appointed Bradley Noel as director of Pentecostal studies, effective August 1. In addition to providing leadership for this academic track, Noel will teach courses in Christian ministries at the Toronto university. He comes to Tyndale having served at Acadia University and Masters College and Seminary, where he created a variety of live and online courses. Most recently, he has been dean of distance education at International Bible Online Training, the distance education provider for Vanguard College in Edmonton.

NHOP's Summer High School Camp

Ottawa's National House of Prayer has announced a 'high school week' open to 35 young people between 14 and 18 years of age, August 17 - 24. The week preceeds 'The Cry' when hundreds, perhaps thousands of youth will converge in Ottawa to intercede for the nation.

New Saskatchewan bishop

Blaise Morand, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, resigned May 26. Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father Albert Thevenot as his successor.
