The State of the Local Church - Part 1: Is the local church disappearing?

Comments

Great article... an additional factor - not mentioned is the mighty dollar. The city will often allow for re-zoning residential - thus making new thousands in property taxes. The minute there is even a hint of re-zoning churches haven't a chance of surviving. Developers come in and offer millions - no new church can compete.

I think what the trends are pointing to is the undeniable truth that as long as the church is more in love with culture and tradition, rather than Jesus, they will eventually disappear. What the article fails to consider is that mainline churches who have maintained a primary emphasis on the Gospel are doing just fine. Those that have forsaken the Gospel are the ones that are closing. I suspect the same will be said about Evangelical churches in the near future. It's all about Jesus, folks.

How interesting the "vital" & "sustainable" are defined in terms of numbers & dollars. The most succesful ministry ever had only 13 people in it's core! I would also challenge Elliott & Goodwin statement that most people just want to be better disciples when the trend is to move from the city where there is obvious need out to the suburbs. True disciples hear God's call to the weak, poor, widowed & orphaned.

There appear to be two 'Jesus stories' in the synoptic Gospels - 1) the mythologies surrounding the death and 'resurrection' of Jesus and 2) the life of social justice lived by Jesus (broke tribal, steriotype, prejudice, and religeous boudaries). (Sponge, Jesus for the Non-religeous). What if faith based communities focused more on the second story and less on the first? What implications might that have for building faith based communities and addressing current social issues such as homelessness, mental illness, etc?

Or, does mythology trump social justice for many or most people?

The Bible and all that's in it is either true or a myth, not both. The modern churches are preaching a "social gospel" that does NOT save souls, just comforts them. The "TRUTH" has not changed, so why change the message. These are the days of the "falling away" why are we surprised? The "TRUTH" shall set you free!
