With each issue of options we set out to ask the question: What does it mean to
be Christian in today’s culture? As young people, you have nothing
but options: options for your education, career, relationships and
ministry. While our culture may lack character, it does not lack choices:
they’re endless.
This Fall we’ve tried to dig our heels in and
tackle questions around consumerism and community, reflecting on the words
found in 1 John 2:17: ‘The world and its desires pass away, but the
person who does the will of God lives forever.’ In this issue
you’ll discover stories of young men and women living
counter-culturally in our all-too-material Western world.
‘High fashion & the heart of Africa’
(page 4) follows the journey of Calgarian Jeff Town from the upscale floors
of Canada’s high fashion industry to dredging water as an intern with
Samaritan’s Purse in the heart of Malawi.
Young Christians, several of them Regent College
grads, have created an oasis in the heart of Canada’s poorest
neighbourhood. David Aupperlee describes the process of ‘becoming
naked,’ of helping new friends to strip away layers of shame poverty,
addiction and poverty as together they tend a garden reclaimed from the
wasteland.

Life can be challenging for Christians in public
schools. ‘Campus impact’ (page 14) by Doris Fleck demonstrates
that times have changed and old methods of reaching young people are no
longer effective. But there’s plenty of life and many new approaches
among grassroots students and youth workers on campus.
Each issue we feature new music (page 10) and movies
(page 13), as well as insights from youth leaders across the nation (page
43) and our national events calendar (page 46) – and much more. Every
Fall we create a magazine to be distributed by the organizers of the
CCUFairs as they present their Christian colleges and universities to
students across the nation. It is inserted into options (pages 17 – 48).
We’d love your feedback on some of the new
additions and changes to options. What do you think of the new cover look? What kinds of
articles are you interested in reading? What do you want to see more of?
What do you want us to can?
Please take a moment and send us your thoughts and
