Music talent search in Calgary

Undiscovered Christian musicians, songwriters and performers who enter the Cross Canada Talent Search have the chance to win prizes that could jump-start their career.

The competition was held last year for the first time, with dozens of artists from across the country converging on Calgary to compete in the songwriting and performance categories.

Sponsored by Shine 88.9 FM, the 2008 talent show is held in conjunction with GMA Canada Week in Calgary from October 21 – 24.

Winners of the adjudicated competition receive a demo recording package, radio airplay, music gear and a trip to the prestigious Estes Park competition in Colorado the following August.

Leroy Harder, producer and organizer of the talent search, explained that all the major agents and labels from the United States head out to Estes Park “scouting for the next artist they want to get behind.”

Kitchener, Ontario’s Adam Padfield, the winner of last year's songwriting competition, said, “I had no idea how big of a deal it was going to be until I got there.”

He entered three of his songs in the songwriting category, which boasted over 250 entries. When all three made it into the top 30, Padfield, who had gone with no expectations, said, “It was crazy.” Undiscovered Christian musicians, songwriters and performers who enter the Cross Canada Talent Search have the chance to win prizes that could jump-start their career.

Padfield went on to win Jazz/  Blues Album of the Year at the next evening’s Covenant Awards.

The Cross Canada Talent Search has been Harder’s brainchild to shine a light on these amazing musicians.

As Padfield prepares for the competition in Colorado he encouraged upcoming artists to take the risk and enter the talent competition.

 “Don’t limit God,” he said.

“I had no clue I was going to win. You just never know what might happen.”

The deadline for submissions is October 10.
