Last spring my fiancé was about to finish
university and we found ourselves at a crossroads, gazing at an endless
array of possibilities: cities, schools and jobs.
Possibilities – options . . . make me feel free,
and I become mindful that, like everything else in life, I can become
distracted and lose sight of what’s most important. In my experience,
possibilities can do one of two things: expand our horizons, or
incapacitate us.
I wrote the following at a time in my life, not so
long ago, when I felt surrounded by lackluster possibilities that had taken
me captive:
I had become intoxicated with the allure of choices
Lively, distinct blends of possibilities
And I thought I would find life, but
Instead I got lost, lost, lost
I thought the twists and turns would make the rabbit
hole dance
With colour and I could fall in love with the wonder
And I did
And they enthroned themselves.
My unremarkable lords.
Chanting the verses of individuality
Mesmerizing me with their self-focused incantations
I truly believe God honours our choices, and that
opportunities are beautiful gifts that reveal his trust of us.

During that time of transition we visited with friends
Jordan and Sarah. At that time, they were also in the midst of some big
life decisions: what country to live, what school to attend, what jobs to
take, etc. They shared with us a conversation they had had earlier in the
week with their grandma.
Right in the middle of what they felt to be mass
upheaval, grandma simply offered this:
whatever happens, that will be the best thing.
Remarkable. (Oh grandma, you’re so smart )
God trusts us. He is with us. He won’t let us
royally screw up. Or even if we do, he will gently redirect our path (or
perhaps huck a wrench in the road!) Either way he is with us, for us, and
intimately interested in our best interest.
Whatever happens, that will be the best thing. We
don’t need to get caught up running through all the what-if
scenarios. They destroy us. Instead we need to thank God for the place he
has us and for the even greater things to come!
