Uniquely among Canadian theological colleges, Emmanuel
and St. Chad’s theology degree program is founded on a college Great
Books Seminar. One of our students, Nancy Yee, had this to say about her
experience:
In first term, we spent many hours studying
English/Anglican works spanning the 17th and 20th centuries. Each of us
developed preferences for either the dark beauty of John Donne’s
poetry, the more intellectual sermons by Evelyn Underhill, or the
captivating writing style of Susan Howatch.

This term’s seminar had its own flavour. We
struggled with analyzing Tertullian, Aquinas, Luther and Rowan Williams;
but under the guidance of supportive faculty, we successfully navigated an
intellectual journey like no other. People began to share more, write
better papers and form an intellectual community.
I think the Great Books Seminar makes our experience of
learning deeper. God is always faithful to gather the willing and the
hungry, to be touched and fed in unfathomable ways.
