The purpose of Pax Avalon: Conflict Revolution is to inject concepts of peace-making into popular entertainment. The key
character of this graphic novel is Julianna ‘Pax’ Embry, who has a supernatural ability to heal, and rejects violence as a means
of resolving conflicts.
Creator Steven Reece Friesen also addresses issues such as bioterrorism and
cloning. He chose to make the chief villain a Christian – because, he told Canadian Mennonite, the millionaire industrialist’s “approach to violence is control, and it’s a direction I see some . . . Christians taking.”
According to Mennonite Weekly Review, Friesen also hopes his work will counter some of the dominant elements in many
graphic novels, such as “exploitation of body images, and simplistic representations of good and bad.” Most importantly, he notes: “Unrealistic scenarios perpetuate the idea of violence as a solution.” Pax Avalon can be purchased at HeraldPress.com.
Friesen is pursuing a Masters of Theology at Canadian Mennonite University.
