IT’ NOT EASY being green, for some Christians.
A Rocha Canada wants to help change this state of affairs. The Christian
environmental group, based in Surrey, is working with Missions Fest organizers – and with event host Broadway Church – to make this year’s Missions Fest Vancouver a greener event.
A Rocha will bring volunteers to the event to ensure recycling is done; lights,
heating and air conditioning systems are off when not needed; paper is
conserved; and there is minimal waste of washroom supplies.
Specific steps will include using ecologically friendly cleaning products;
setting up a shuttle service between SkyTrain and the church; putting up
friendly stickers to encourage washroom users to use less paper, water and
soap; and establishing a policy to print on both sides of paper.
A Rocha will also have a booth – where, says community relations coordinator Luke Wilson, “our Green Team will show off the ‘coolness’ of being green.”
Wilson adds: “We believe that the Christian community should be setting the standard for
environmental action of conservation, restoration and education.”
Stewardship of creation, A Rocha believes, is every bit as significant a ‘mission’ as any other represented at Missions Fest. This gathering, he says, “is a great chance for us to motivate many churches and individuals to take up
the mission of creation care in a very practical way.

“We hope to build long-term relationships with those who really believe that this
mission is something the church needs to start taking seriously.”
Once Missions Fest is over for this year, A Rocha will do an evaluation and
encourage the ministry to incorporate ecologically friendly ideas into its
established policies.
“Our long-term goal,” Wilson says, “is to help Missions Fest set the standard for green conference planning and
execution.”
