“FIVE DAYS of learning, laughter and music” will characterize Epiphany Explorations 2011, according to event organizers.
The annual conference, sponsored by First Metropolitan United Church in
Victoria, is one of the largest faith-based events of its kind in Canada.
Popular and thought-provoking author Philip Yancey and former MP Flora
MacDonald lead the list of headliners for the conference.
“I am looking forward to the presentations on ‘Grace’ by Philip Yancey,” said Allan Saunders, lead minister at First Met. “His candid reflections have generated a strong response from people across the
Christian spectrum and beyond.”
The author of What’s So Amazing About Grace? recently released What Good is God? , which was inspired by a book tour which landed him in Mumbai, India during the
infamous 2008 terrorist attack.

MacDonald, Canada’s first female foreign affairs minister, has made more than 10 trips to
Afghanistan through her Future Generations Canada foundation. Her aim is to
help communities acquire electricity, clean water and education. Her Epiphany
presentation is especially timely, with Canada poised to change its role in
that country.
Another noted participant will be human rights activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu,
daughter of Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu. She is the founder of the
Tutu Foundation for Development and Relief in Southern Africa. She was last in
Victoria in 2009, as part of Camosun College’s Insight Speaker Series.
Other Epiphany speakers will include Raheel Raza, award-winning Muslim writer
and interfaith advocate, who will look at Islam’s treatment of women; Vancouver Sun religion columnist Douglas Todd; and humorist Arthur Black,
three-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour.
Epiphany Explorations runs January 20 – 24, at First Metropolitan. Contact: 250.595.0507 or firstmetvictoria.com/epiphany – DFD
