THREE women of diverse artistic talents will be
presenting a special event this month, intended to draw attention to
African concerns. RhythmArt promises to be a unique combination of culture
and social awareness.
It will take place at Saanich Community Church in
Victoria, starting 7:30 pm on February 22. The event will feature displays
by Ten Thousand Villages, Level Ground Trading and See Them Run. These
groups are all directly involved in either fair trade or charitable work in
Africa.
The cultural content for RhythmArt will be provided by
poet Carla Funk; Heather Burns, who will perform songs and do
improvisational music with Funk’s readings; and Rose Cowles-Martin,
who will be painting onstage.
“The idea was to do something focused on
Africa,” Burns told BCCN. “It came out of my recent CD, released in November,
called Road Back Home.
The owners of Level Ground Trading are friends of mine, and they chose to
partner with me in the recording. I have featured one of the projects they
are directly involved with in Africa, the Tanzanian Hope Project.
Essentially, they provide health care for a group of farmers in
Tanzania.
“My goal is to always have a means of drawing
awareness to something in the area of social justice or global issues as a
part of my musical projects.”

All three artist are Christians who have pursued their
craft professionally, outside of the church; however, each is tied to a
church community in Victoria.
Burns added: “We are not presenting an evening of
African music and poetry, but rather an evening of high quality performance
art, with a chance to see and hear about the bigger global
perspective.”
