Good Friday in Victoria

The annual Good Friday Service for congregations across Victoria will be happening again this year. It is arranged through a coalition of 20 or so churches – a loosely knit group which is part of the City Church movement.

The service will take place at North Douglas Church, at Mackenzie and Highway One.

This year, the service will double as an ‘introducer’ to the 52 Days of Prayer event (see accompanying story).

The service, which usually draws close to 1,000 worshippers, begins at 10 am.

The North Douglas event is just one of several Vancouver Island Good Friday and/or Easter celebrations being planned for March 21 and 23 respectively.

First Church of the Nazarene, for example, will have an Easter Sunrise service on Mt. Tolmie. Other such events are likely to take place at beaches in Victoria and Parksville.

Others, still, are holy week events which are proscribed in the liturgical calendars of a range of Christian churches, to wrap up Lent and lead to Easter Sunday resurrection celebrations

Some events are planned by individual churches, others by community ministerial groups and others, still, by parachurch organizations.

Island Insight’s best advice is: consult your own pastors to see what might best fit for you, as you mark these important events in the Christian calendar.
