More Than Gold’s ‘Creative and Performing
Arts’ (CaPA) working group facilitated a unique event March 22 in
Surrey.
Aha! showcased a remarkable collection of visiting
artists, in an eclectic flow of ‘everything art.’ Organizers
hope similar events scheduled during the 2010 Games will come off as well
as this opening event. Aha! was organized by CaPA leaders Russ and Sandy
Rosen, and Brent Gibson.
Seasoned performers like Rosen and Graham Ord were
backed by a tight band; Stephen Toon brought his brand of electric folk;
and Anna Vandas’ finely crafted songs were well-received.
Seattle’s Goodfoot changed things up with with
some sweet hip hop and dance – and also accompanied a poetry
reading. Koinonia, a salsa band, had everyone on their feet.
The highlight of the evening was operatic soprano Robyn
Driedger-Klassen, who wowed the audience with her exquisite renditions of
black spirituals, and a set of playful pieces accompanied by virtuoso
pianist Joycelyn Ng.
Dancers from the Dance Barn
in Fort Langley performed supple, humorous
routines – one while dressed as hockey players! Throughout the
evening, fine artists created paintings at the side of the stage.

The event exceeded all expectations, and CaPA will be
hosting more events of this sort.
Sandy Rosen hopes “encouragement, inspiration,
networking and ministry to the full-time artist” will also happen.
She said: “It is undeniable that this 2010 initiative could prove to
be a valuable catalyst to launch the arts in this nation with a more
appreciated and sustainable trajectory.”
