 | | Ness Lake Bible Camp | DURING August of 1979, I
had a camp experience that profoundly impacted my life. I washed
32,000 sets of dishes as part of Work Crew at Young Life’s Malibu
Club, and I paid for the privilege.
For 28 days, I worked with 48 other teenagers –
for 10 to 12 hours a day. Our housing was less than stellar. The
guys’ bunks were stacked four high. We didn’t have any real
‘free time.’ There was no TV.
And it was the greatest month of my life!
Work Crew has become an integral part of every camp I
have served at; and every summer, Work Crew grads say it’s the best
thing they’ve ever experienced.
 | | Camp Kawkawa | Work Crew is a ‘camp within a camp.’
Sessions are typically 2 – 4 weeks long. Campers pay
to participate, but fees are typically highly subsidized. Most Work Crew
programs consist of morning devotions, hard work (8 – 10 hours/day),
play (tubing, rock climbing, beach volleyball or swimming), Bible study,
good food and sleep (or at least the opportunity for eight hours of sleep
every night!).
So, why does it work?
Work Crew teaches servanthood. Jesus came
“not to be served, but to serve – and to give his life as a
ransom for many.” Work Crew makes this concept a daily
reality.
