“JUMP!”
> It’s a simple thing, jumping off a wharf. You just walk straight for 11 feet – down a 10 foot long wharf.
At Camp Artaban on Gambier Island, wharf jumping has become a challenge, an art – and a way to say, “See you next year!”
Each summer, many campers launch themselves off our wharf. For many, wharf
jumping will be old news, but for others it will be the first time they have
ever done something so adventurous. With encouragement and companionship, many
will come back for a second jump and a third, and some will even take up the
challenge to do 100 jumps during the week. Eventually, some campers will
develop their own unique style of jumping.

Wharf jumping is not going to change the world. It is a simple thing. And yet,
when done in the midst of a Christian community, even the most simple things
can have big results – results like building self-confidence, and knowing you are loved and cared for.
At the end of the week, as campers look back toward camp from the boats taking
them to Horseshoe Bay, the inevitable chant will start: “Jump! Jump! JUMP!”
Staff, standing on the end of the wharf, will wave and . . . jump! See you next summer!
