Schiavo anniversary
Father Frank Pavone, founder and national director of
Priests for Life, recently commented on the death of Terri Schiavo some two
years ago. He became a familiar figure in the lengthy ordeal. A friend of
Schiavo’s family, he was one of the few people on her visitors’
list – and was therefore able to access her room.
“Terri’s case remains shrouded in massive
ignorance,” he said. “This was not about end of life decisions,
or removal of medical treatment. Nobody is obliged to use every medical
treatment to keep themselves alive. But Terri was neither dying nor on life
support.”
Priests for Life is the largest U.S. Catholic pro-life
organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. Pavone
is the keynote speaker at Focus on Life (see next item).

War against weakness
Edwin Black, author of the best-selling IBM and the Holocaust, also penned
War Against the Weak: Eugenics and
America’s Campaign to Create a Master Race.
It is a provocative study of how ‘civilized’ societies can
devalue life, which covers things such as Nazi experimentation on humans,
and the implications of the Human Genome Project. In 2003, Black received
the International Human Rights Award from the World Affairs Council for
this book.
