IT’S TIME to Gear Up! Time to stop by the
Lord’s warehouse and stock up on some faith, some peace, some
strength – or just plan hang out with God.
Young people will have a great chance to do all this
early May, at the Gear Up event. Taking place at Pacific Christian School
and Victoria Reformed Church May 8 – 9, Gear Up will hold 10
different workshops on a variety of topics such as worship, leadership and
prayer.
There will be a time of group worship with local bands
Mayflower and the successful Friday’s Cry. Oh yeah, and don’t
forget the free dinner on Saturday night!
Now in its second year, Gear Up’s attendance is
expected to more than triple. It’s pretty amazing stuff when you find
out how it all started.
The event’s founders are Noah Bolinder and Randy
Conklin, two grade 11 students at Pacific Christian School. The two friends
share a passion for God, which led them to seek him while helping their
peers to do so as well.
The idea for Gear Up was birthed in April 2008, and the
entire event was crafted in only a few months. Noah and Randy have taken on
full financial responsibility for the event, as they are not being backed
by any specific church. Gear Up is totally running on the faith, commitment
and enthusiasm of these two dynamic young guys.
A little risky, you ask? Perhaps.
But as Randy toldBCCN, there’s no losing when you put your trust in God.
“W are learning to trust him, no matter what
happens. If five people show up and the bands don’t come,
that’ll be okay – because we know God’s working. As long
as we are authentic and are praying, we can learn to trust.”
The main speakers at this year’s Gear Up are Mike
Davis and Ira Parmenter.

Ira, a local fireball from from Colwood Pentecostal, is
returning from last year. Mike has ministered in Canada for more than 25
years, and is making the trip from Brandon, Manitoba.
Noah told an extraordinary story of how they landed
Mike as the main speaker.
“We were praying for a speaker when the name Mike
Davis just came to my mind. I had never heard the name before, so I googled
him – and found out he was lead pastor at Bethel Christian Assembly.
We corresponded by email – and not long after, Mike got confirmation
in a dream that he should come to Victoria!”
These and other remarkable confirmations are helping
the boys realize that it’s all about God’s power, and his will.
“We’ve seen him work and put things
together . . . Without him, it would be impossible,” Noah admitted.
All those in highschool and university are invited to
come on out to Gear Up. Tickets are only $25, and can be picked up at
Christian Book & Music or at the door.
