I was dismayed by the many inaccuracies in the recent article, ‘Nuns forego huge profits in land deal,’ published in the April edition of BC Christian News.
The title itself is untrue, and many other factual corrections may be found in a letter written by Sr. Marie Zarowny, which is online at queenswoodvictoria.ca/support.
In framing the sale as a ‘good-bye’ story, the writer omitted the well-publicized fact that Queenswood Retreat Centre is negotiating a long-term lease from the University of Victoria (UVic) and plans to continue its ministry with UVic as our new landlord.
This fact was prominent in the original media release of the sale, issued jointly by the Sisters and UVic. By omitting it, the article leaves the reader with the false impression that Queenswood and its programs are at an end.
On the contrary, the sale created a way for their ministry of spiritual development to continue as a living legacy, a goal that the Sisters planned and worked toward for years.
This article also sadly misrepresents Queenswood Retreat Centre’s programs. Queenswood’s program focus is to provide spiritual renewal for those who care for others.
As an outreach ministry which is very relevant today, we help restore love, energy and healthy commitment in the hearts of teachers, nurses, Christian ministers, social workers and other caregivers.

These caregivers come from many different spiritual and religious backgrounds, and our programs reflect that reality.
Queenswood offers the traditional retreats found in many Catholic retreat centres, and also offers programs from other traditions which do not contradict Christian faith.
The Christian Reiki taught at Queenswood, for example, is a ministry of Christ’s healing which has emerged from Japanese culture; we witness its fruit of healing, renewed faith and peace.
In Luke 9:49-50, John said: “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.”
But Jesus said to him: “Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.”
Jesus urges us to be open to all good works being done in his name.
