Summer fiction: history, thrills, values and answers

For your summer reading pleasure, here are some recommendations from Kevin Lee, owner of Sign of the Fish bookstore.

Bodie & Brock Thoene: Sixth Covenant, Tyndale House, 2007

This latest novel in the ambitious  A.D. Chronicles  series by the Thoenes places the reader with Mary, Yosef and baby Yeshua as they make their way to Jerusalem. The writing shows mastery of this historical genre. Along with a wonderful telling of the story, study questions are included for individual or group discussion. We can discover the truth through fiction.

Catherine Palmer & Gary Chapman: Summer Breeze, Tyndale House, 2007

Second in the series, the authors use an entertaining and thought-provoking narrative, set in a lakeside vacation town, to picture the ‘five love languages’ (from Chapman’s book series). The believable characters reflect the seasons of relationships in this charming page-turner. This is classic summer reading with redeeming social and spiritual value.

Wanda Brunstetter: A Sister’s Secret, Barbour Publishing, 2007

Returning to her Amish community after her rumschpringe ( ‘running-around years’), the oldest Hostettler daughter bears a carefully harboured secret. Startling attacks against the community and her family, and the return of an Englisher she once knew, threaten to destroy Grace’s future. Mystery, romance and suspense are wrapped up in the best writing done by Brunstetter yet, in this first of the Sisters of Holmes County Series.

Francine Rivers: The Last Sin Eater, Tyndale House, 2007

This comes highly recommended as an evocative portrayal of life in the 1850s – and a powerful message about Christian beliefs and the need for forgiveness of sins. Ten year old Cadi Forbes is a compelling character who sees the ‘sin-eater,’ a human who absolves the residents of a tiny Smoky Mountain community of their sins. Before their journey is over, they discover the One who will demand everything from them in exchange for the answers they seek. A captivating tale. This edition contains colour pictures from the movie version released earlier this year.

Joel Rosenberg: The Ezekiel Option, Tyndale House, 2005

Featuring hot summer intrigue and apocalyptic implications, this book has been described as an episode of 24 with a supernatural twist. A great story of political machinations, prophecy and undercover action, it’s more gripping than ever two years after publication. Rosenberg is the New York Times best-selling author of The Last Jihad and The Last Days  – novels ripped from the headlines. Hard to put down.

Karen Kingsbury: Sunrise, Tyndale House, 2007

She’s done it again, with No. 1 of the Baxter Family Drama series. Kingsbury fans will be thrilled as familiar characters meet new ones. Dayne and Katy are engaged to be married, and trying to avoid  paparazzi. Meanwhile, the Flanagan family is struggling with their new boarder, a star school athlete. After a drug overdose, only God’s grace can bring him back from the brink of death – physically and spiritually.
