THE front lawn of Kelowna’s Trinity Baptist Church was the stage for a dramatic statement May 23 – 24. Freedom 151, consisting of members of the church’s youth group and some of their leaders, wore chains and held up signs
protesting human slavery.
The group’s aim is to raise enough money to free 151 slaves. Since September, the team has raised $68,000, through dessert nights, yard cleanups and T-shirt
sales.
“Kids today want the hard facts, not a padded version of the truth,” said Simon Ng, middle school pastor at Trinity.
“I told them all about the sex trade in Asia, how girls as young as six years old
– just like their sisters, cousins, kids they babysit – are being used by men the age of their fathers and grandfathers. And that makes
them mad enough to do something about it.”
