SOME Crescent United Church members in Crescent Beach, who have spent their
Wednesdays for more than 11 years walking together for fitness and friendship,
have taken their activity to a new height – or distance, to be more precise.
The Crescent Walkers, from South Surrey, have challenged themselves to ‘walk across Canada,’ to commemorate the 2010 Winter Olympics. The goal of 6,654 kilometres is
equivalent to a journey from the Pacific coast to Newfoundland.

parks and waterfront trails, to pursue their goal. These energetic people have
kept track of their steps with pedometers, since commencing in May of 2006.
Most of these folks are over the age of 70. One walker is 90 years old. Some manage a pretty quick pace, others are a
little less agile; but all of them are making strides at keeping fit.
Many of the Crescent Walkers retired to the west coast from other parts of
Canada. As they reach further eastward on their virtual trek, they take a
special interest when passing the kilometres representing their home towns.

The final destination is Corner Brook, Newfoundland, the home of Jean Roe, the
honorary leader of the pack. They expect to arrive at their goal in August.
