RELIGION AND POLITICS are topics avoided by many people in polite conversation – but not by Tim Schindel.
The director of Leading Influence Ministries (LIM), based in Victoria, works
hard to bring these two issues together. He serves as chaplain to the B.C.
Legislature, providing spiritual care for MLAs and others in the political
arena.
“We are not here with any political agenda or bias – rather to be a support for those who serve our society in these leadership
roles,” he told BCCN.

Recently, LIM sponsored the fourth annual B.C. Legislature Prayer Breakfast – held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, next door to the legislature.
It was a vibrant gathering of some 150 people, with church leaders and MLAs from
a wide cross-section of denominations and political parties.
When Leonard Krog, NDP MLA for Nanaimo, was asked why he came to the event, he said: “I was so impressed that there are people who are willing to pray for us. I have
attended four times, and appreciate the support.”
These events give an opportunity for political leaders to cross political
boundaries, and consider how their faith can influence their actions. MLA Norm Letnik, BC Liberal for Kelowna/Lakeland, noted that his deep Roman Catholic
roots have helped give him a clarity on where to stand on issues of conscience.
The attendees at the prayer breakfast were able to meet with MLAs, and learn
more about the needs they have in their roles. Some attending were there to
support MLAs who are members of their community churches.
According to its mission statement, the overall aim of LIM is “to be a blessing to those who have been called to serve our nation politically,
by bringing the hope and strength of Jesus Christ into their lives.”
