ONCE AGAIN, it has been demonstrated that B.C. has some
of the best Christian writers in the country.
On June 11, The Word Guild held its annual Write!
Canada awards to promote and develop the work of Canadian Christians in a
variety of genres. B.C. writers dominated six out of the 30 categories.
Categories range from best books and columns to poems,
song lyrics and scripts, all having been published in 2007.
B.C. residents walked out of the gala with awards
for best biblical book, three genres of articles and best column/editorial/
first person essay.
‘Redekop on Mackey,’ published in BC Christian News,won best
review article. John Redekop reviewed former BCCN editor Lloyd Mackey’s The
Pilgrimage of Stephen Harper.
B.C.’s other award-winning writers came from
Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island; they were published in a
variety of newspapers, books and magazines.
James Houston, from Regent College, won in a tie
– against himself – for both volumes of his book, Letters of Faith Through the Seasons.
Paul Beckingham, of Carey Theological College, took
home two awards – and was runner-up for his inspirational /
devotional and personal experience article.
Mark Buchanan of Duncan won in the best column /
editorial / first person essay category, for ‘Sabbath in the
Summertime.’
Violet Nesdoly of Langley took home the award for best
article for children and young adults.

Every year, Write! Canada honours a writer whose career
achievements deserve recognition.
This year they gave historical novelist Connie Brummel
Crook a career achievement award for her widely read young adult novels and
children’s picture books.
The black tie event was held at the World Vision
Canadian headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario. Guests were treated to a
catered reception immediately following the award ceremonies.
The Word Guild is an association of Christian Canadian
writers and editors who are dedicated to encouraging and fostering the
highest standards of excellence in writing.
