ATHLETE  Johnson Wilson is seen here with Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan in May, at the annual City of Vancouver Youth Awards. The citation issued with the award reads:

“Johnson Wilson’s journey began at the Streetfront Alternative Program based out of Britannia Secondary, a program to help students with difficulties in continuing their high school education. It was here, where Johnson found his passion: running.

“Through subsequent months of vigorous hare work, Johnson has run and completed three marathons: the 2005/2006 Seattle International Marathon; and the 2006 Vancouver International Marathon. In all three instances, he was the youngest to finish the race.

“Despite coming from a rough background, Johnson has prevailed: from being a failing student to being an honour roll student – and an inspiration to others. His goal is to run six marathons before he turns 17.”

Wilson will finish a race of a different kind in the near future, when he undergoes baptism. According to James Lee, a pastor with Vancouver Urban Ministries, Wilson has overcome “very difficult” circumstances, and “was recognized because of his contributions to the community and his friends.”

Most importantly, Lee stated, Wilson “accepted Christ last year – and is planning to get baptized.”   – DFD
