Ron Reed nominated
Ron Reed, a veteran of Christian live theatre in
Canada, and director of Pacific Theatre has been nominated for the $100,000
Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre. This award is the largest
in Canadian theatre, and will be presented October 29 to the
professional director deemed to have made the most significant contribution
to theatre in Canada. He joins 26 other nominated Canadian directors. A
short-list will be announced at the end of September.
Baptist anniversary
‘God is good’ is the theme of the Greater
Vancouver Baptist Church’s 25th Anniversary August 12. The church is
welcoming Paul Chappell from Lancaster, California to speak at special
services 11 am and 2 pm. The church is situated on Victoria Drive at
Kingsway.
Vote for Rob
Chilliwack’s Rob Berg has received six
nominations for the 2007 Maja Awards – to be held in Toronto
this month. His nominations are for contemporary gospel album of the
year, for Life on Purpose ; male artist of the year; producer of the year (shared with
Chris Janz); video of the year; artist of the year; and album of the year.
A self-styled ‘musicianary,’ Berg travels abroad several times
a year. Online voting will go toward the final decision of the
judges, and will count for 15 – 20 percent of the final decision.

Fresh look at evolution
Cornerstone Community Church in Vancouver is
facilitating a series of events this month, offering a fresh look at
creation vs. evolution. The speaker, Emil Silvestru, is president of
Creation Ministries International. Topics include: ‘Genesis, the
Gospel and the Creation/Evolution Issue’; ‘Waters of Contention:
Was Noah’s Flood Fact or Fantasy?’; and ‘The Tree that
Became a Bush: The Evolution of Human Evolution.’ The talks art

Councillor’s charge revealed
Tim Stevenson, a city councillor and United Church
minister, pleaded guilty in court to charges of drinking and driving
July 16, having kept the incident secret for over a year. He told the
court he had consumed three and a half pints over two or three hours,
before driving 10 blocks to his home. He was fined $690 and has had his
license suspended for a year. He is reported to have said that it was a
“judgment” problem and not a drinking problem.

Myztery in Top 5
Vancouver Band Myztery has reached the top five in the
Great Canadian Band Challenge, sponsored by the Hard Rock Cafe. They are
competing against more than 90 bands. One thing that sets them apart is
their Christian faith, as evidenced in their video, which shows various
images of Jesus. They are hoping fellow believers will consider voting for
them. The contest concludes September30.
