Handel’s Resurrezione sure to be a Fest Van highlight
THE organizers of Festival Vancouver seem to have
established a fine tradition, digging up obscure works of special interest
to Christians. This year is no exception.
Lovers of both music and scripture will no doubt be
drawn to La Resurrezione , the first Vancouver presentation of an early work by concert
favourite George Frederic Handel.
Program notes describe this depiction of Christ’s
conquest of death as a work “full of abundant energy, sumptuous
music, a delightful libretto that pits good versus evil, and a powerful
dramatic arc – in short, an oratorio that offers the best of great
opera.”

The soloists are Suzie LeBlanc, Shannon Mercer, Matthew
White, and B.C. natives Colin Balzer and Tyler Duncan. La Resurrezione will be at the Chan
Centre August 11.
All five soloists will also be featured in Membra Jesus Nostri, a rare
presentation of a sacred work by Buxtehude – August 14 at UBC
Recital Hall.
Other notable performers will be soprano Measha
Brueggergosman (August 7); and B.C. harpist Lori Pappajohn (August 12),
both Christians.
