Hymns for Chase

Chase, located midway between Kamloops and Salmon Arm, on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake, marks its 100th year of being a town, this summer. One of its churches, which has been around for close to half the time, will do some celebrating of its own.

Chase Evangelical Free Church, begun in the 1960s as a spinoff from Kamloops and Salmon Arm congregations of the same denomination, has several events set up for the week of August 2 – 9.

A particular highlight will take place August 3, 2 pm, when the Gospel Sisters and Friends will do a concert of hymns sung over the 100 years that Chase has been in existence. The event will be at Chase Memorial Park.

The sisters are Bernice Casteel and Chelsea Heppell, who were encouraged to put the hymn project together by Chase Centennial Committee member Zilly Palamar.

Other gospel groups, from various parts of B.C. and Washington, will be on hand at various times, both on Sunday and throughout the week. Info from the church at 250.679.3626.

Hope with Bella

Skaha Pavilion was the place, and the screening of an inspirational movie entitled Bella was the event,  July 19 in Penticton. Sponsored by Penticton Vineyard Community Church, the evening began with burgers at 6 pm; the show began around dusk, complete with popcorn.

The evening was designed to communicate the message of hope, forgiveness and redemption to the audience.

Bella has been widely acclaimed, in recent months, by people who appreciate what they see to be a compassionate portrayal of the pro-life message.

Sunday Gospel

Sunday Gospel will be just one of the features at the Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival September 5 – 7 at various venues around Penticton. The festival is promoted online at www.hellobc.com, where the Sunday Gospel sector is included along with Dixieland, Big Band Swing and Zydeco.

Leadership Summit

Willow Park Church is the local site of this year’s Leadership Summit, which will feature, among others, Charles Colson.

The August 7  – 8 event, done by satellite link with The Leadership Centre: Willow Creek Canada, is being promoted in several churches, including Trinity Baptist.

Bergens’ church

Pastors Kon and Gail and the congregation at Church in the Marketplace, Vernon, will be looking forward to the arrival from Kenya of John and Eloise Bergen. (The story of the couple’s recent ordeal in Kitale is on page one of the main paper.)

Church in the Marketplace is the home congregation of the couple; it is affiliated with Kelowna Christian Centre, through the Open Bible Faith Fellowship.

More info on the congregation and its approach to mission outreach is available at www.churchinthemarketplace.com.

Sahali birthday

It is a bit late in coming but still worth mentioning, as a means of illustrating the global significance of the church.

In a recent blog on the church’s website, pastor Henry Devries of Sahali Fellowship, a Christian Reformed congregation in Kamloops, mentioned that “we had the privilege of participating in the worldwide church’s birthday party today.” The day he wrote that was Pentecost Sunday, May 11.

Devries continued: “Every year the church celebrates Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Easter. The very first one was marked by the sermon of the apostle Peter, that led 3,000 people to be baptized that day.

“Every Pentecost since, there are many baptisms on that day by the church, totaling more than 3,000 when you add all the churches in the world. Sahali Fellowship had the privilege of being part of that annual celebration again this year with two baptisms.”
