IN ADDITION to the ongoing hard work of its Working Groups, MTG is beginning to
lead clusters of churches in specific collaborative responses to the Games.
July 15 saw 25 leaders representing ten Richmond churches gather at Trinity
Lutheran Church. They were acutely aware that Richmond, with the Airport and
the impressive new skating oval, will be a very strategic place during the
Olympic Games. In addition, all the leaders indicated a desire to form a
stronger ongoing ministerial.
“We have the building, and want to invite other churches to come and collaborate
using it,” said Trinity Lutheran leader Don Hindle. The church is directly across from
Minoru Park, a main socializing area the City is using at the time of the
Games.
Many ideas for a significant Christian witness were proposed, including large
screen sports events, internet cafes and a Fusion street festival. A further
meeting is planned in coming weeks.
In addition, Airport chaplain Layne Daggett expressed the hope that Christians
will be available to help his office in myriad ways.
