In the Park with God
Sundays in the Park at Beacon Hill Park’s Cameron Bandshell are continuing apace on August 2, 9, 16 and 23, in line with
some 65 years of tradition. The services run from 6 to 7 pm. Each service is
preceded by a time of fellowship and barbecued hot dogs, beginning at 4:30 pm.
Attenders are encouraged to bring salads, drinks and desserts to share. No
charge for the hot dogs.
The organizers for the long-running event intend, during this month, to “acknowledge and celebrate the . . . obedience, vision and faithfulness of some
special individuals – like Tom Oshiro, John Stone and Norman Archer. God has built a substantial
foundation, for the greater things that he still wants to do in this city.” More info is at www.cityreach.ca, or the Facebook group ‘City Reach Victoria.’
Serving class
Gateway Baptist Church, in the Royal Oak area, is doing something called a ‘Serving Class.’ The introduction to the idea, on the church website, states: “You are absolutely unique, and have been given gifts and talents that enable you
to serve like no one else. In these classes, you will be helped by others to
discover what your gifts and talents are.”
More info is available at www.gatewaybaptistchurch.ca. There is no announced
time for the Serving Classes; rather, a suggestion that the church office be
contacted.
Brush up on basics
Providence Community Church is setting up a ‘Christianity Explored’ next month, to help people investigate Christianity or “brush up on the basics.” The promo for the course, on the Providence website notes: “You won’t be asked to pray, sing or read aloud, and you can ask any questions you like.
Or, if you prefer, you can just come along and listen.”
Providence, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America, has its
weekly worship services Sundays at 10 am in the Monterey Centre, 1442 Monterey
Avenue in Oak Bay Village. Senior pastor is Steve Bickley. Scott McDowell, the
pastoral intern, is the person with more information about Christianity
Explored.

Heritage housed
In Duncan, one of the places where families can find a Christian pre-school is
Agapeland, located in a 1910 Heritage House adjacent to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Established in 1982, it is billed as a facility for three
and four year old children whose parents are looking for an enriched nursery
school operated from a Christian perspective.
Among the activities: music, arts and crafts, dance and movement, singing games,
poems, fingerplays, story telling, drama, activities in French, signing, board
games and puzzles. For more details, contact www.standrewsduncan.org or 250.746.4551.

Prayer shawl
If you live in Nanaimo, you might have been the recipient of a prayer shawl,
lovingly knitted by a member of Brechin United Church. The ministry was
organized by the Pastoral Care Group at Brechin, a suburban congregation on the
north side of Nanaimo.
Notes the website entry about the Prayer Shawl initiative: “Whether you are lonely, fragile, not up to par for whatever reason, the comfort
and lift that comes along with this soft cozy gift does bring physical comfort – and a real blessing, in knowing that the folks at Brechin care about you.”
More info is at brechinunited.ca.
Scenic advantage
Island Life Discipleship Centre is a spinoff of Maranatha Foursquare Gospel
Church in Nanaimo, and Pacific Life Bible College in Surrey. Lisa Wengel, who
is on the Maranatha pastoral staff, is director of the Centre – which is intended to provide basic leadership training for people who might want
to go into ministry, or be active as a Christian lay person.
The Vancouver Island scenic setting is considered a plus for the Centre,
especially as it relates to using its natural surroundings for learning and
fellowship experiences.
Outdoor activities, in line with that objective, include hiking, camping, snow
shoeing, surfing, caving and water sports. Outreaches take students into the
more remote areas of Vancouver Island. Contact: ildc.ca – Lloyd Mackey
