AS principal of British Columbia Christian Academy for the past 14 years, I
often get asked: What makes Christian schools unique? What is it that has
caused so many families over the past 20 years to enroll in Christian schools?
I have thought about this at length, and tried to clarify in my mind what the
important elements are which make Christian schools important to the raising of
our children.
At BC Christian Academy, we have encapsulated it into what we call the three Cs:
Community, Compassion and Christ.
Christian schools started with a community of Christian believers.
Christian schools are so much more than just places which educate students in
academics, fine arts and sports.
Christian schools are relational places – where we understand that God created every one of us in his image, and that
every one of us is highly valued in his eyes. In fact, the Bible said that he delights in us!
As a community, the relationships we build are important. God has made us
relational beings, and we need to interact with one another, sharing our trials
and joys. It is our relationships with one another – and with God – which provide a life of fulfillment.

The second C reminds us that God has also called Christian schools to be
compassionate. Matthew 25:40 said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Jesus tells us we need to put God’s love into action.
When our students see someone in need, they are to do what they can to help. It
is important that our students learn to watch for needs in the school, in the
surrounding neighbourhood and overseas. This broad perspective is important if
our students are to impact the world for Jesus.
The third C refers to Christ. Jesus Christ, God’s own son, came to the world to sacrifice his life so that we sinful humans
could be saved and have eternal life.
Christ is why Christian schools exist. Christian schools were developed to
support Christian families in directing their children to know Jesus Christ as
their personal Lord and Saviour.
Therefore, everything we do and teach is from a Christian perspective.
If our focus is on Christ and we take him as our role model, then academics,
athletics, fine arts and spiritual growth will all take care of themselves.
When our students humble themselves and serve God rather than themselves,
working hard to give glory and honour to God, they will reach their full
potential in their academic, artistic and athletic endeavours.
