FREEDOM SESSION was founded by Ken Dyck “to help churches deal with the deep levels of brokenness in our society.
“We minister to a large number of sexually addicted, sexually abused people;
those going through divorce and separation; food addictions, gambling, alcohol
and drug addiction,” said Dyck, who recently left Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Surrey to spend more
time on Freedom Session.
“We minister to white collar businessmen alongside ex-prostitutes. We’ve had pastors and their wives . . . take the program. We’ve run it in prisons.”
Some who have taken the program have wound up helping to operate it. Don Bell is
general manager of Falcon Equipment in Surrey. His wife Bonnie is a one-time
children’s pastor.
“Neither Don or Bobbi had alcohol, drug or sexual addiction issues,” Dyck told BCCN. “They were simply Christians knowing something was missing, and something was not
working right.”
According to Bobbi, taking the program herself was not originally her
intention.
“When I walked into Freedom Session in the fall of 2006, along with my husband,
my daughter and my sister, I had it in the back of my mind that I was there in
support of them only – and that this was not something I needed. I believe it was week two that God
shouted in my ear – when it was said: ‘If there’s pain in your life . . . it’s there for a reason.’ There was definitely ‘pain in my life.’”
Asked to be specific, she was candid: “I was not happy in my marriage, and my relationships with my sister and daughter
were frustrating, to say the least. I had bitterness and anger always just
below the surface; that was making my life miserable.
“Through the Freedom Session process, I was able to see ‘my part’ in the whole dysfunction of my household. With the tools the program gave me, I
was able to work on these things, use healthy methods to resolve conflict and
rebuild the relationships in my life.”
The strategy worked, she declared. “I am happy to say, each and every relationship has been healed and now function
in a much healthier way.”
Bobbi added: “We think so highly of Freedom Session that both Don and I have facilitated the
past two years. And even though Don is going to take this year off, I am quite
sure I will be facilitating again.”

Asked how he most benefited from the program, Don rephrased the question: “What has God done? What was my most key, meaningful breakthrough?”
While asserting that he had experienced “many breakthroughs,” he emphasized: “The number one victory was when God revealed the true meaning of grace. It was
depressing to admit, but 18 years after I had asked Christ into my life, I still didn’t get it – and had not found nor experienced the true forgiveness I was desperately seeking
and desired.”
This led to what he saw as a divine encounter. “As we approached the forgiveness portion of the program, God clearly spoke to
me: ‘Don . . . while it is completely unearned as you comprehend it, just accept . .
. it is what it is.’
“It’s called grace – and for the very first time, I knew I was unconditionally forgiven. After years
of actually believing fate would find its target, this understanding of grace
allowed me, at the age of 55, to finally forgive myself.”
Don concluded: “You have no idea the unbelievable and liberating feeling which came over me – and it was at this very moment that it became extremely easy to unconditionally
forgive all those who had hurt me in my life.”
Freedom Session is now available on DVD. The next Leadership Training Seminar
for the program will be held September 18 – 19 at Southgate Church in Langley.
