Cheers!
They call it Cheers the Church, and it meets Sunday mornings at 11 am in the
Cannery Coffee Shop. The pastors, Joey and Dennis Cyr, got the idea for the
church’s name during a Hamilton Tiger Cats football game when they were involved in a
youth ministry in the Steel City. (The theme song from the television sitcom Cheers! – whose episodes mostly took place in a Boston pub – was played at the game.) The church has been going 18 months, and it is now up
to 60 people, making it a tight fit in the restaurant. Cheers has the full
blessing of Penticton’s Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle and is affiliated with the Pentecostal
Assemblies of Canada. The Cannery is at 301–1475 Fairview Road. The website is www.cheersthechurch.com.
Alliance search
Mission Creek Alliance Church, a congregation of around 500 with a two-service
contemporary/traditional format, is in the middle of a careful search for a new
pastor. The former incumbent, Leon Throness, who had been at Mission Creek
since 1996, left last year to take on the lead role at Chilliwack Alliance in
the Fraser Valley. The church website (www.missioncreekalliance.com) includes
several documents meant to provide background on the search criteria, the
congregational profile and its history since its founding in the 1960s.
Applicants are directed to enquire through the denomination’s B.C. office, at cpdoffice@cmacpd.bc.ca.
New food ‘czar’
Janet Brubacher is the new food services director at Green Bay Bible Camp, a
long-established beachfront facility in West Kelowna. Brubacher has been in an
orientation program during the summer with Kathy Klassen, who served in the
role from 1999 to 2005, when she left to work in real estate in the Kelowna
area. Brubacher’s full-time appointment was effective September 1. Several other Green Bay
personnel changes, plus a camp policy to keep H1N1 flu at bay, are detailed at
www.greenbay.bc.ca.
Good $ense
One of the many services offered through the Trinity Care program at Kelowna’s Trinity Baptist Church is Good $ense. As might be deduced from the creative
use of the dollar sign, the service tries to provide answers to several
questions, such as: What does the Bible have to say that can help us manage our
personal finances? The ministry is designed to help people discover biblical
financial principles and apply them in a God-honouring way. Pre-registration
can occur through signing up at the Trinity Care kiosk in the church lobby or
by emailing Carol Stevens at cstevens@trinitybaptist.net.

Kickoff
The ‘fall kickoff’ for Kamloops Alliance Church is set for September 15 from 7 to 9 pm. The church’s program promises “concerts, worship, retreats and lots of great times.” Larry Boss, the church’s lead pastor, and his wife Barbara, who is in a counselling ministry, have been
at KAC for just a year, following five years of pastoring in Egypt and a
previous ministry in Poland.
Redevelopment?
Kamloops United Church is exploring various options for redeveloping its
property. The church sanctuary, built in 1979, and its Christian education
centre, constructed in the 1960s, are in need of renovation, at least. The
congregation’s leadership has been working with Colliers International’s property consulting division in Vancouver. A Colliers assessment letter
explores the idea of the church working with willing neighbours on a
comprehensive redevelopment project, which would include much-needed community
housing. The letter points out that the church has some “very critical attributes,” including strong congregational support, a close knit community and strong
community support. Info: kamloops-united-church.com.
