Porn demands action
Canada Family Action (CFA) has applauded the 11-year sentence given to Kenneth
Klassen of Burnaby July 28. Klassen pleaded guilty to having sex with 14 girls
as young as eight and nine in Cambodia and Colombia. He is the third person
charged under Canada’s 13 year old sex tourism law.
Klassen was arrested after Canada Customs discovered he had mailed himself 65
pornographic DVDs from the Philippines. His pornography collection included
homemade videos of himself sexually molesting young girls. Klassen admitted he
had been abusing girls for more than 30 years.
CFA is campaigning for harsher sentences for child pornography. It says the
removal of pedophiles from society is the only sure method of protecting
children.
Walk & Roll
Communitas Supportive Care Society hosted its first ever Walk-Run-Roll-a-Thon
fundraiser on August 27. Prizes were given, but it was not a race. The emphasis
was on people supporting each other to make healthy choices. The event included a BBQ, with live music afterward.
Communitas is a non-profit, faith-based social services agency. It provides
resources to persons living with mental, physical and/or emotional disabilities
– in communities in the Fraser Valley, North Vancouver Island and the Okanagan.

Sing for Swaziland
The Canadian Tenors will present ‘Voices for Bulembu’ September 17–18 at the Mission Hill Family Estate in West Kelowna; and September 19 at
Vancouver’s Chan Centre.
Bulembu is an abandoned, AIDS-ravaged town in Swaziland, Africa. It was bought
in 2006 by a group of entrepreneurs – with the goal of restoring it to a vibrant, self sustaining community.
The vision includes caring for 2,000 orphans, and fostering a new generation of
leaders. The Canadian Tenors raised $945,000 for the cause in 2009.

Coffee shop targeted
In 2009, the Church at Southpoint created the Small Ritual Coffee Society. It
operates a coffee shop in White Rock to promote ethically sourced premium
coffee; to foster community interaction; and to provide a venue for local
artists.
The society hopes to earn a profit that will go to ministry budgets. Some
volunteers donate tips to local missions and charities.
However, the project was set back on August 13, when thieves broke in and stole
some of the equipment.

Tapped for money
Maranatha Baptist Church in Abbotsford is heading up a September 11 motorcycle
ride, to raise money for the Turn On The Tap program set up by Samaritan’s Purse.
Each rider is asked to pay a $25 registration fee, and to raise $100 – the cost of supplying a BioSand water filter to provide safe drinking water to a
family in the developing world.
Worldwide, an estimated 884 million people have no access to safe water, and
each year 1.4 million children die from diarrhea-related diseases.

Proclaiming the Word
Inspired by a Prayer Canada meeting in North Vancouver, more than 70 people read
the Bible aloud across the Greater Vancouver area last September. They read
from balconies; in backyards and parks; and at midnight from Cypress Mountain.
The effort is being repeated September 11, in various locales worldwide.
Organizer Glenn Houghton said: “It is like washing the city with the Word, healing and cleansing it.” Participants can be assigned a passage by emailing ReadtheWord@mayiprayforyou.com.
