PACIFIC Christian School (PCS) , which is rooted  in the Christian Reformed Church, now names 100 denominations among the 500 families who enroll 1,000 students.

The school is a landmark institution whose buildings spring into clear view on Highway 17, between the Mackenzie and Royal Oak exits.

For the first time, PCS recently recruited a development director. Filling the position is Kevin Seibel; he and his wife, Sylvia, are early 90s PCS graduates.

Sylvia took studies at Trinity Western University before marrying. Her pre-motherhood work was in the human resources field. As for Kevin, the educational and work choices he made over the past 18 years have shaped his adaptation to his new work.

In 2005, the couple returned from Calgary to Victoria, where they have a fair-sized extended family.

Subsequently, Kevin completed a masters in business administration at Royal Roads University. The emphasis of his studies was on teamwork and leadership. His thesis explored a coaching program he developed for district leaders in a Christian denomination.

Seibel is cautious about what difference a development director will make to the future at PCS. “Fundraising for the school, and how we accomplish it, will be a major focus.”

Fundraising campaigns have, for the most part, “never been for the school, but rather for projects. Those projects have taken the form of acts of service – shoe boxes and eye glasses” for people in the developing world, for example.

That kind of service orientation will continue. But the application of development concepts for the school itself will likely roll out of the explorations conducted by the PCS leadership team.

Kevin and Sylvia see the time they spent, during their formative years at PCS, as having been “key in developing our characters, and readying us for our adult life.”
