Remembering Lorraine
Lorraine Yvonne Thompson’s sudden death, while on
a camping trip, is being mourned – not only by her husband, Bob, and
her three children, but by the members and staff of Trinity United Church
in Vernon. She was active in United Church Women, the Trinity Drummers and
Grannies a Gogo.
Thompson was a registered nurse, specializing in
maternity and nursing care. Her work experience included seven years in
Japan. In later years, she taught English to new Canadians, became a home
support worker and was known as ‘mom’ to dozens of refugee
families.
Life Coaching
One of Kelowna’s churches has four strands of
ministry listed on its website (www.mountaintopcoach.com), including one
called ‘Life Coaching.’ Mountaintop Church, an
interdenominational group which meets each Sunday at 10 am in Mission Hall,
in the Mission area, offers the option at midweek sessions listed in the
site’s calendar. Notes coach/pastor Tim Perry: “The coaching we
offer seeks to equip people practically to live the Christian life,
applying biblical principles to one’s personal life, relationships,
at work and so on.” Info at admin@mountaintopcoach.com.
Discipleship school
The Kelowna School of Discipleship is a community
living experience that works alongside Kelowna Vineyard Church.
According to its website (www.kelownaschool.com):
“It is a five month program . . . modeled after [things such as]
YWAM’s Discipleship Training School, drawing on the strength and
maturity of existing training facilities, while integrating into the local
Vineyard Church community.”
The program incorporates some three months in Kelowna,
and two months in Bangkok, Thailand. The Kelowna time is spent living in a
community house, worshipping, learning, team building, and exploring
one’s relationship with God and each other.

Website visitors are advised that participants will
experience both the beauty of the Okanagan Valley as well as discovering
the streets of Kelowna – where one finds more street people per
capita than in any other city in Canada.
The Ark
In its 102nd year, First Baptist Church in Penticton is
putting together something new to add to its outreach, according to senior
pastor Callum Jones. He says: “One of the most exciting new
ministries we are developing is our Ark Youth Centre. This is going to be a
great opportunity to connect with young people, as we run a youth drop-in
centre for high school students, and an after-school club for elementary
students.” More info at 250.492.3824.
Jazz vespers
The Trinity United, Vernon website
(www.unitedchurchvernon.com) reveals a number of innovative
ministries, built upon what is termed the church’s ‘core
values.’ Among them is a jazz vespers service, held the last Friday
of each month. Info at 250-545-0797. –
