David Crowder Band: Church Music, Sixsteps
In their fifth studio album, visionary David Crowder and his band show us once
again why they are the leaders of the post-modern worship movement.
Crowder has left behind the bluegrass of A Collision, adapted the pop/rock of Remedy and added layers of electronica – to create the most original, out-of-the-box, unstereotypical worship album of
the year. The 17 tracks clock in at more than 73 minutes; but I found myself
always entranced, both sonically and lyrically.
The disco beat on th title track will have you up and dancing. The album’s first single and most likely corporate worship song, ‘How He Loves,’ uses layers of heavy electric guitars as a backdrop to a beautiful image of God’s love, as Crowder sings: “If His grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking.”
For years now, I have respected him as a songwriter, and been blown away by his
concerts – but never found myself listening to his albums. I see that changing, with this
CD.
The David Crowder Band made their debut visit to the Vancouver area when the
Passion tour hit GM Place, along with Chris Tomlin, in October 2008. Now the
band are the headliners, and are bringing their tour to Seven Oaks Alliance
Church in Abbotsford on October 18. It will feature music from this new album,
along with favourites like ‘Here Is Our King,’ ‘Everything Glorious’ and ‘No One Like You.’
