OKANAGAN residents Al and Ev Hromek have been helping the troubled people of
Haiti for several years. It all began, said Al, with a church encounter.
“Our pastor at Kelowna Oasis of Love Miracle Centre, had a vision of my wife and
I in Haiti. We had never even thought about Haiti; [it] was not on our radar.”
Since then, they have given seminars in the country, worked with many pastors and preached in Haitian churches. One of the high points of their ministry took
place in the corridors of power in 2008.
“We wanted to share the Good News with President René Préval. We had brought gold covered Bibles for him and his wife, and other gifts – and God had given me a special word for him.” The president, however, proved difficult to meet.
“On the final day before we flew back, we still had not seen the president . . .
but we did not despair.”
A shipment of 10,000 Bibles had arrived that day. The Hromeks helped distribute
them at the Ministry of Education, “where we spoke and prayed and blessed the workers with Bibles. While we were
there, a call came from the palace that the secretary of state, the second most
powerful man in Haiti, wanted to see us in one hour on behalf of the president.”
At the palace, “the secretary of state sat with us and served us coffee. He was a most gracious, humble man. He received our gifts on behalf of the president, and I shared with him what God
had told me to say to him, which was: ‘President Préval, God is very proud of you; keep up the good work. Haiti is returning to its
former glory.’ The secretary was very pleased . . .
