AFTER being wrongly imprisoned for 22 years for a murder he did not commit,
David Milgaard is finding his way. This year he was baptized.
Books have been written about him: Real Justice by Cynthia Faryon, When Justice Fails: The David Milgaard Story by Carl Karp and Cecil Rosner and A Mother’s Story: My Battle to Free David Milgaard by Joyce Milgaard and Peter Edwards.
Throughout his incarceration, Milgaard protested his innocence, even though that
meant that he was never granted parole.

Forensic evidence eventually proved that another man had committed the crime.
Milgaard credits the consistent care and of volunteers from the M2/W2 prison
visitation ministry as being a lifeline. He told Canadian Mennonite magazine that they, “became like a second mom and dad to me. They were always regular . . . As a
prisoner, what you get is that you have somebody that is there because they
want to be there. They just want to be there to be with you. We don’t get that inside the penitentiary. We don’t get much of anything in there other than keeping your eyes peeled for what’s going to come next. So when you actually have someone who is willing to sit
down across from you and offer you a smile and a warm sense of caring for you . . . it’s really nice to have.”
