EVERY summer, thousands of kids from all over Vancouver Island and Metro
Vancouver descend on Camp Qwanoes to experience summer camp.
During the rest of the year, people of all ages come to the camp for retreats
and other events.
At Qwanoes, camper and staff safety and health are of utmost importance. So, as
a part of health care upgrades last summer, camp staff were delighted to add
two Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs).
One of the AEDs was donated. Qwanoes was one of 200 organizations across Canada
chosen to receive a complimentary defibrillator from Medtronics as a legacy of
the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

One of the AEDs is located at the waterfront, and the other one at the camp’s health care centre. An AED delivers a shock to the patient’s chest to help reset the heart’s normal rhythm and can literally mean the difference between life and death.
Tim Fletcher, a registered paramedic who served as Qwanoes’ first aid attendant last summer, said, “I hope we never have to use our AED, but it is such a comfort to know we have a
high tech piece of equipment right at our fingertips if we ever need it.
Seconds count during a cardiac emergency.”
Qwanoes is a Christian camp founded in 1966 and situated on 50 acres of scenic
waterfront property between Victoria and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
