Cursillo at 25
The Cursillo community on Vancouver Island marked 25 years of activity September
25, with a celebration at St. Peter’s Quamichan Anglican Church in Duncan.
Cursillo is an international movement, found mostly among Catholics and
Anglicans in Canada. It is committed to “equip Christians to be the church wherever they are, in whatever stream of
tradition or theology they resonate,” according to Kathy Fitzsimmons, Cursillo BC lay director.
A major focal point is a Cursillo Weekend Event – a short course concentrating on the experience of open relationship with God
and others and a simple method for “living the gospel,” Fitzsimmons adds.

Coastal Missions at 30
Coastal Missions, too, had an anniversary – their 30th. They marked it with a barbecue at Calvary Baptist Church in
Chemainus, attended by 300 supporters.
Oldtimers will remember the Shantymen, who used to traverse the west coast of
Vancouver Island with their Messenger ships, bringing spiritual help and social fellowship to people in remote
communities.
When the Shantymen packed it in, Coastal Missions took over the role, building a
new ship, called Coastal Messenger. They expanded the range of their ports of call to include Washington and Alaska.
Adelle Wickett, editor of Island Insight’s predecessor, Sunday Magazine, attended the event.
She reports: “Everyone was issued a navy blue t-shirt with the CM logo. There was a great
concert in the big tent, MC’d by a lady who is a news broadcaster from Los Angeles and did a fabulous job.
“The music was a great mixture of songs by former members of the Ambassador’s quartet, an opera solo from the girl who grew up next door to the mission
house and is now studying in Paris, bagpipes by a Chemainus dentist and some
ragtime on the piano.”
